Handcycle Trimmer Recreation Area, near Fresno, California
After taking care of some business in Fresno, we decided to take a detour and catch a bike ride in the foothills just east of Fresno.
The area is part of the Sierra National Forest, and offers amazing cycling on lightly traveled roads. We camped out at the Trimmer Recreation Area, on Trimmer Springs Road by the Pine Flat Reservoir. Trimmer Springs Road winds its way around the lake offering fantastic views of the foothills, the lake and the central valley. The road is tortuous and hilly, which makes for a good workout, but also some grand views. There are lots of shaded areas at the side of the road to rest, and take in the views.
Traffic on this road is extremely light, the only thing that we ran into was a group of cows that weren’t too sure about letting a handcycle and catrike past.
If you are looking for a good day ride close to Fresno, then this is an excellent option. Bring lots of water, if you head out this way. It gets hot and there are not many places to refill water bottles. Check out the slide show for some views of our ride.
Also within easy reach of this area are the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The Generals Highway through Sequoia is well trodden and a little too busy to be traveled comfortably by handcycle. It is definitely worth the visit, and the road down into Kings canyon, is very lightly used, and provides excellent riding.
